Hödlmayr International GmbH Opens Austria's Largest Carport-PV System in Schwertberg

| Technology & Sustainability

Schwertberg, June 17, 2026 – Hödlmayr International has successfully completed one of the most significant sustainability projects in the company’s history at its Schwertberg site. With its official completion and opening, Austria’s largest carport photovoltaic system is now operational – a milestone on the path to greater energy independence.

The completion ceremony took place on Monday, June 15, right at the compound in Schwertberg.
Guests of honor included Markus Achleitner, State Councilor for Economic Affairs and Energy for the State of Upper Austria; Mayor Max Oberleitner (Schwertberg); Johannes Zimmerberger, Managing Director of Linz Netz.GmbH; Martin Traska from Sparkasse Oberösterreich; Kurt Mayr from Porsche Austria; and Rudolf Schütz along with his team from project partner Electrify. Numerous other project participants attended the ceremonial opening.

“Upper Austria is a pioneer in the transition to renewable energy because the energy transition enjoys broad support, especially from our companies, as demonstrated by today’s official opening of what is by far the largest carport PV system in Austria. The Hödlmayr company is not only demonstrating responsibility but is also capitalizing on the opportunities presented by the transformation of energy production. For Upper Austria in particular – as a leading industrial and economic province – it is of crucial importance that our businesses have security of supply, predictable energy costs, and competitive framework conditions. This strengthens the region as a business location and also makes us less dependent on price fluctuations in international energy markets. This project by Hödlmayr once again underscores Upper Austria’s pioneering role in the energy transition. It also demonstrates once again that ecology and economy are not a contradiction, but rather act together as turbo twins,” said Markus Achleitner, State Councilor for Economic Affairs and Energy.

The heart of the project is a photovoltaic carport system with a total of approximately 1,900 covered parking spaces and a total capacity of about 6.6 MWp.

The electricity generated is put to specific use: Some of it is fed directly into the site’s power supply, helping to reduce the amount of electricity purchased from external sources. The majority is fed into the public power grid, thereby contributing to the supply of energy from renewable sources.

Combined with its existing hydroelectric power plants, the Schwertberg site will achieve energy self-sufficiency of about 55 percent in the future.
In addition to ensuring a reliable energy supply, the primary focus is on climate protection: The plant generates an annual reduction in CO₂ emissions of about 3,170 metric tons and, based on calculations, can supply approximately 2,250 households with renewable energy.

Construction of this major project began in November 2024. One of the key milestones was the installation of a power line approximately 4.5 kilometers long to the Mauthausen substation, which ensures the plant’s integration into the power grid.

“This project embodies our commitment to innovatively combining economic stability with responsible business practices. We are strengthening our energy independence while simultaneously feeding clean energy into the grid – an important step toward the energy supply of tomorrow and a major milestone in the consistent development of our future electric ecosystem.” – Robert Horvath, CFO of Hödlmayr International GmbH

The project was carried out in collaboration with our joint venture partner, Electrify.

“I have personally followed this project over many months. I am all the more pleased that, together with Hödlmayr, we were able to successfully implement one of the most significant sustainability projects in the history of both companies. The fact that it was implemented while operations continued, combined with the technical complexity, makes this project a true milestone and demonstrates how economic requirements and a sustainable energy supply can be effectively combined.” – Florian Schütz, CFO of electrify GmbH

A Clear Vision: Energy for the Logistics of Tomorrow
With the launch of this facility, Hödlmayr is sending a strong signal regarding the transformation of the logistics industry. The consistent expansion of renewable energy is a key component in reducing dependencies and sustainably lowering CO₂ emissions.
