Germany – higher road tolls from 2019

Following the extension of tolls to include federal highways in July 2018, the probable increase in rates at the beginning of 2019 will mean the second massive rise in road traffic costs in Germany within six months. Moreover, in the opinion the German Freight Forwarders and Logistics Association (DSLV) these additional costs will have to be passed on directly to industry, commerce and consumers, as the direct causers of goods transports.

According to the DSLV, in particular the change in toll rates will affect vehicles with a permitted dead weight of over 18t and four or more axles. In 2017, this category of truck already accounted for 65 per cent of all the kilometres subject to tolls. The German Federal Freight Haulage, Logistics and Disposal Association (BGL) calculates that the annual toll expense for trucks in this class with go up from its current level of EUR 12,960 to EUR 22,440. This estimate is based on a yearly distance travelled of 120,00 km and a ratio of 80:20 between motorways and federal highways. A further increase in toll rates is also anticipated in Austria in 2019.
