Mobile sensors have been developed for this purpose and installed on city authority vehicles. The resultant measurements should furnish data that enables real time insights into the quality of the atmosphere, which in turn could provide a key to cleaner air in large conurbations. In a similar project in Houston, Texas, a fleet of 20 to 30 vehicles has proved sufficient to successfully cover some 70 per cent of the city area.
Data is to be collated and evaluated until the end of 2019. One objective is to determine the manner in which this information differs from the available stationary measurement systems. Moreover, the impact of vehicle speed on the measured values and the speed window that offers the best results are also being determined.
