Hödlmayr has become the central turntable for the international automotive market
Automotive Logistics Specialist Celebrates 50 Years

On February 19, the logistics enterprise HÖDLMAYR INTERNATIONAL AG celebrates its 50th anniversary. The small firm that started out in 1954 transporting pigs from Schwertberg in Upper Austria to Vienna has grown into an internationally active affiliated automotive logistics enterprise, that offers more than “just“ transport of vehicles from one place to another. The function of Hödlmayr covers the entire process chain – straight from the manufacturer’s assembly line all the way to the handover of a new vehicle to the end customer. For its birthday, Hödlmayr is presenting a fully new and particularly innovative Internet presence under www.hoedlmayr.com.

The new website of the Hödlmayr group takes customers and interested parties through the entire product palette that this international logistics enterprise has to offer. In all locations - the affiliated enterprise is currently represented in 14 countries worldwide, 12 of which are in Europe (Austria, Germany, Belgium, the Netherlands, Italy, Slovenia, Croatia, Serbia, Bulgaria, Rumania, Hungary, the Czech Republic), one in Asia (Thailand) where there is a daughter company and one country in South America (Argentina) – customers are offered tailored service packages that cover every conceivable need.

One constant automotive transport service that Hödlmayr have been offering since 1961 is the transport of vehicles by special trucks or special railway wagons from the manufacturer’s plant to a logistic distribution centre, or from there to the automobile dealer.

Hödlmayr offer a much more profound service package to the customers that use the automotive logistics enterprise’s distribution centres. It does not just concern the storage of the vehicles. The vehicles undergo an inspection, distribution services are carried out, the vehicles are equipped and modified according to the customers’ requests and then, if required, they are delivered to the exact deadline.

In addition to this all-round service for the automotive industry, automobile importers and dealers, Hödlmayr have developed themselves into a general service provider that offers the entire logistical chain from the factory to the salesroom. This chain begins already with the inspection at the end of the manufacturer’s assembly line. This quality control by Hödlmayr as the “Releasing Agent”, as it is known in the jargon, adds a more precise and independent control and allows possible improvements in the production to be shown.

As a Lead Logistics Provider plant, Hödlmayr creates and optimises the entire logistical network that is required for the vehicle to make its way from the factory to the end customer, all the while offering the additional services that are involved. The entire freight carrier management including the choice of sub-service providers, transporters and distribution centres, the entire risk management with insurance as well as the running supervision, coordination and administration of the logistic services for the manufacturer are all borne on the shoulders of the Lead Logistics Provider that is Hödlmayr.

Hödlmayr has handled such Lead Logistics Models both alone and with partners.

In future, logistics enterprises such as Hödlmayr will, together with the automobile dealers, become the central turntable of the automotive market. The Internet plays an increasingly important role in this – which is why Hödlmayr has created a whole new design for its presence in the World Wide Web, which it will launch on its coming anniversary.

In the not too distant future, the time from when the customer orders the vehicle to the vehicle’s delivery will be reduced to just a few days. Already today, many end customers choose over the Internet the vehicles that come closer to their desires and then go to a dealer who has the particular model in order to view it and make a test drive. This will become more and more the norm in future.

The customer orders from the dealer the vehicle with the exact configuration that was chosen via the Internet and receives the exact date on which it will be delivered – if desired, already registered and with insurance policy.
Using Hödlmayr’s proprietary Vehicle Tracking System (VTS), the dealer can follow the vehicle from its pickup location to its deposition simply by clicking the mouse.

A requisite for this is that the numerous transporters and service providers that are already involved in the transportation chain must be coordinated by a lead logistics provider such as Hödlmayr International.

In future, a general service provider such as Hödlmayr International can also reclaim the used vehicle from the dealer, prepare it and either send it back to the automobile dealer or, if the vehicle is to be sold over an Internet marketplace or by an auctioneer, store it in its distribution centre until its next delivery.

Under the trademark “fix & save”, Hödlmayr offers the preparation of used automobiles to all dealers as well – bringing the experts of Hödlmayr into the realm of the automobile dealer.

What began in 1954 as a small private business – company founder Johann Hödlmayr celebrates his own 75th birthday together with the 50th anniversary of the company – has become an internationally active Austrian flagship enterprise.

HÖDLMAYR INTERNATIONAL AG has targeted a consolidated turnover of a round 170 million Euro, employs some 1600 employees and owns more than 500 special vehicle transporters and 300 railway wagons. Somewhat over one million vehicles are delivered all year round by Hödlmayr. In eight automobile factories around the world, Hödlmayr acts as the Releasing Agent (forwarding company that is also responsible for the entire quality control of new vehicles). As Releasing Agent, Hödlmayr manages some 1.1 million commercial vehicles per year.
